MEDICAL TOURISM
Medical tourism is also called medical travel, health tourism or global healthcare. It is the rapidly-growing practice of international travel for the purpose of obtaining health care. Every type of health care, including elective and complicated surgeries, psychiatry, alternative treatments, convalescent care and burial services are covered under medical tourism. Concerns regarding legal oversight, payments and quality of care top the list for both medical tourists and service providers.

With the rising cost of healthcare, patients, international companies, government health sector and insurance companies are working together to find ways to reduce the medical cost without reducing the quality of care. Most of the medical tourists visit Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, or India as medical tourism is now a booming industry in Asia.

In a recent meeting in Phuket, Thailand, a new association was formed – the Asian Medical Tourism Association (AMTA). With the emerging trend of more people entering into the medical tourism industry in the region, medical and health care providers in the Asia Pacific found it necessary to create their own medical tourism association to maintain high standards among medical practitioners.

AMTA acts as a voice of medical tourism industry throughout Asia. To encourage the growth of its membership rapidly, membership to the association for the first year is free of charge The association is currently undergoing formation, and medical and health practitioners are highly encouraged to lend their voices to ideals and standards other practitioners would need to adhere to ensure high quality of care is maintained among all members, regardless of their country of origin.
