The Public Health Ministry has drawn up a five-year plan to double the revenue of medical service businesses to Bt400 billion by 2014 through the government’s plan to make Thailand a medical hub and world-class spa destination.

The move is in line with the 11th National Economic and Social Development plan ending in 2014, under which the number of international hospitals and other medical services such as dental clinics offering world-class treatments will be increased.

In addition, Phuket will be developed as one of the country’s medical knowledge centres in the South, where medical students will be trained to be specialists.

Dr Visit Tangnapakorn, deputy director-general of Health Service Support, said that of the projected revenue medical service should account for 75 per cent, health service development 20 per cent and the remainder from health products.

This makes it easy to tell everyone at the office that you’re off to Phuket for sun and fun, when really you’re going to come back with a new nose or different set of genitalia. You get to recover in a tropical locale, and often the surgeries themselves are much cheaper. (Perhaps the surgeons and clinics are a little sketchy, but that’s another subject altogether.)
